Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Holds 10th Convocation Ceremony

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University conducted the tenth convocation ceremony on Saturday, 1 February 2020. The Governor Banwarilal Purohit presided the ceremony and granted degrees to 2,938 students, out of which 2,713 were present to receive the degree whereas 225 were in absentia. The degrees were awarded to the candidates in the presence of Madras High Court Chief Justice, Amreshwar Pratap Sahi, Supreme Court Judge, Bhushan Ramkrishana Gavai, and Law minister C.V. Shanmugam.

Addressing the convocation, Justice Gavai said that lawyers serve as a crucial interface between those who deliver justice and those who seek justice. He further stressed that it is the responsibility of the member of the legal profession to ensure that the doors of justice always remain wide open for the downtrodden, exploited, aggrieved, vulnerable, marginalised, and indigent. He also quoted the diplomat and justice Mohammadali Carim Chagla saying that being a lawyer is a profession, not a trade or business. Further adding to his speech, Justice Gavai said that in business, the sole purpose is to make money but in the legal profession making money is of less importance. He claims that in law, some traditions prevail to which you have to be true and also have to serve the fellowmen and society as they are the primary objective of the profession.

Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Sahi, also addressed the crowd earlier and said that maintaining high ethical standards, personal behaviour and demonstrating a strong character need to be maintained by every lawyer. He said that although lawyers are given a lot of respect, at times are looked upon with suspicious eyes by the public.

Sahi urged the lawyers to improve their professional conduct and said that intellect of a lawyer should be orientated more by logic, common sense and applicability of the law to life instead of skills of superior intelligence for that does not provide with the pragmatic result but only provides theoretical heights. He believes that the job of a person in the legal profession is the most difficult in the world as they constantly have to persuade the human mind that whatever they are saying is the best. He said that society today is civilised but still is strewn with strife and due to rival thoughts, tensions mount high in the society. A lawyer should not let his imagination be curtailed and should keep within the confines of thoughts as the petty problem today might turn up into a universal problem tomorrow.

He said that members of the legal profession and lawyers have to train their mind such that their thought process travels the entire horizon, conquer mirages and at times even travel into the unknown.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, T.S.N. Sastry, also spoke during the ceremony and encouraged the members with his uplifting words.
