The success percent of more than 300 colleges in Tamil Nadu has been less than 50 percent this year. The major reasons attributed to this poor result are shortage of qualified professors, lack of proper infrastructure, and shortage of the latest technology laboratory facilities.

According to the statistics, the results of students in these 300 colleges have been below 50 percent in the last five years. Moreover, the results are declining every year. One in four engineering students of Tamil Nadu cleared all the subjects of the exams held in January 2019.

Only 25.33 percent students have cleared all the subjects of the first semester this year, which is less than the percentage of last year that was 40 percent. A total of 81,178 students appeared for the first year semester examinations and they belonged to 481 colleges that are affiliated to the Anna University. Out of all these students just 20,562 managed to clear all the subjects.

The number of students clearing the maths examination was the least. Only 31.15 percent students passed the Maths - 1 exam this year whereas last year over 40 percent students had cleared the subject. The pass percentage of Engineering Chemistry and Engineering Physics was still better with 68.55 percent and 55.46 percent students clearing the subjects respectively.

A professor of Mathematics said that the reason for such poor results is that most students do not have their basic concepts cleared despite having passed class 12th. The bridge course that is taken up by the colleges to help students understand these basic concepts does not help a lot of students as well.

Some principals blamed the quality of students for the poor results while some said that the mismatch between school education and engineering education takes a toll on students and they need time to get accustomed to that.
