Tamil Nadu Govt. Firm on Setting Up AIIMS in the State: CM
- K. Ponmudi, former Minister (DMK) sought clarification from the state government on why it recommended setting up of AIIMS in Thanjavur.
- The government has proposed Thanjavur for setting up AIIMS with the estimated budget of the project amounting to Rs. 2,000 crore.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu clarified that the government was firm on ensuring the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state. For this purpose, the government has proposed Thanjavur for setting up AIIMS with the estimated budget of the project amounting to Rs. 2,000 crore. The main objective of state government for supporting AIIMS in Thanjavur is to boost tertiary care services. Mr. Palanisami, CM of Tamil Nadu made this statement while responding to the Opposition that raised the issue in the state assembly.

In 2015, a team from Centre visited Madurai, Chengalpattu, Perundurai, Pudukottai and Thanjavur scouting for land. The estimated area of land for setting up AIIMS is 200 acres.
Giving a reply to the question raised by K. Ponmudi, the Chief Minister mentioned that the team pointed out few shortcomings at each of the proposed areas. After carrying out a detailed inspection, the team clarified that Chengipatti in Thanjavur is the favourable location for setting up AIIMS. Therefore, to complete the project as early as possible, the state government has recommended Chengipatti as the proposed area to set up AIIMS. The state government has communicated the same to the centre recently.

He further mentioned that the centre is not in favour of setting up AIIMS in Chengipatti of Thanjavur. The centre wants to set up AIIMS in the district or locations proposed by it.
During the annual budget of 2015-16, the centre announced the establishment of AIIMS in Tamil Nadu.
