Tamil Nadu: HC Issues Notice to CBSE on Plea to Cancel NEET-UG 2017

On May 22, 2017, the High Court of Madras issued a notice to CBSE on a petition that demanded the cancellation of admission process under the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET. The petition also claimed that the board must be restrained from declaring the results of NEET-UG 2017 examination. A parent, Mrs. Rohaiyaah Sheik Mohammad filed the petition.

The petitioner claimed that the questions in the English medium question paper were based on the CBSE syllabus, and the questions in the Tamil version of question paper were based on state syllabus. The parent further claimed in the petition that the policy of CBSE would treat equals as unequal. It violates the Article 14 of the Indian Constitution. Article 14 states that students are given admission based on merit without any concessions and prejudice.

The petitioner also pointed that the candidates who took the examination in English medium from Tamil Nadu were discriminated. Most of the students from Tamil Nadu who took NEET examination in English medium had not done well in the examination. These students studied state syllabus until Class 12, and the questions in the examination were CBSE syllabus based. On the other hand, the candidates who took NEET in Tamil medium did well in the exam, as most of the questions were based on state syllabus, claimed the petitioner.

Now, the petitioner is seeking justice, as students from English medium will not get a higher rank in the merit list. The petitioner also demanded the board to conduct re-examination with a uniform question paper in all the languages.
