Tamil Nadu: State Govt. Makes Final Effort to Refrain from NEET

It has been six months since the state government of Tamil Nadu adopted legislations to exempt its students from NEET. All the efforts made by the state government to exempt from NEET have failed till now. As a final effort, Health Minister of Tamil Nadu along with Health Secretary met Union Health Minister, Mr. J P Nadda and Union Minister of State for PMO, Mr. Jitendra Singh. The representatives or a delegation explained the pros and cons of NEET-based admissions in Tamil Nadu to the union ministers. They also sought clearance for the two bills passed by the state assembly exempting its students from NEET. Earlier, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu accompanied by few ministers met Prime Minister of India on the same issue.

There is no clarity whether the central government gives NEET exemption for Tamil Nadu. The legislations adopted by the state assembly are still under consideration. According to sources, it may not be possible for the centre to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a national level medical entrance examination. Almost all the states are conducting admission process based on NEET merit. Therefore, it will not be fair to give an exemption to Tamil Nadu in the process.

Since the efforts made by the state government have failed, it issued an order on June 22, 2017, reserving 85% seats in medical and dental courses for state board students and only 15% seats for CBSE students. On July 31, 2017, the High Court of Tamil Nadu dismissed the appeal filed by the state government regarding the reservation issue terming it as discriminatory.
