In order to mitigate the shortage of professors/ teachers in medical colleges, the MCI (Medical Council of India) has increased the professor-student ratio to 1:3 from 1:2 in PG (Post Graduate) medical courses across the country. On the other hand, the faculty-student ratio for assistant professors has been increased from 1:1 to 1:2. Last year, MCI had increased the teacher-student ratio in government medical colleges, but this year, all medical colleges across the country can assign three students per professors at postgraduate level.

Recently, MCI had relaxed the norms for medical colleges so that they can apply for an increase in postgraduate medical seats. The norm was applicable only to those medical colleges, which have been in existence for 15 years and have been running postgraduate medical courses for the past ten years. These colleges should also have renewed their postgraduate licence at least once. Only these colleges were allowed to apply for the hike in the intake.

MCI also relaxed norms allowing more colleges to apply for offering PG medical courses. MCI will grant approval after carrying out a mandatory inspection of colleges.

In March 2018, the Union Cabinet had given its nod to increase UG and PG medical seats for the academic session 2019-20. The process will be carried out in a phased manner, and the Union Cabinet had allotted Rs. 14,930 crore for the same. The government will soon set up 24 new medical colleges, 248 midwifery and nursing schools in underserved areas.
