Teachers Outnumber Students in Telangana Private Pharmacy Colleges
The demand for pharma courses in Telangana has been declining. The student-faculty ratio is 1:20 in pharmaceutical colleges in Telangana instead of 1:20 faculty-student ratio.
In an ideal scenario, the strength of students in educational institutes should be higher than the strength of teachers. However, the situation has turned totally opposite in Telangana where teachers outnumbered students in private pharmacy colleges across the state. Student enrolment in pharmacy courses in Telangana is deteriorating every year.
Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE) has concluded the third round counselling process for Pharma courses based on TS EAMCET 2018 ranks. For the academic session 2018-19, 150 colleges in Telangana offered 23,000 seats in Diploma, Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses in Pharma. The worst part is that only 2,000 seats have been filled until the third round. There is no clarity whether TSCHE will initiate fourth round counselling or not.
As far as the seats under convenor or state quota concerned, all the seats have been filled in Pharma D and Biotechnology courses. On the other hand, only 100 seats in B.Pharma course remained vacant under state quota. However, the number of seats vacant in private pharma colleges is high this year.

The total number of teachers working in colleges that offer pharma courses is 6,218. The faculty-student ratio in 150 pharma colleges in Telangana has become a major concern. The student-faculty ratio is 1:20 in pharmaceutical colleges in Telangana instead of 1:20 faculty-student ratio. Since 2014, the demand for pharma courses in the state has been declining. In 2014-15, 12,592 students joined pharma courses out of 35,556 seats.
Due to the declining demand for pharma courses, the state government has been reducing the intake every year. Despite minimising the intake, the colleges are constantly failing to attract students. On the other hand, the overall placement percentage of pharma courses in Telangana is less than 45%.

It is time for the authorities to figure out solutions to mitigate the number of vacant seats in pharma courses.
