2,806 Teaching Posts Vacant in IITs, 3,211 in NITs

As per the official data of HRD Ministry, close to 2,813 teaching posts vacant in IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and 5,606 faculty positions are vacant in central universities. On the other hand, 2,311 faculty posts are vacant in NITs and IIEST (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology) while 258 teaching posts are vacant in IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management).

Responding to the issue of vacant faculty positions in premier institutes, a senior HRD Ministry official revealed that vacant posts and filling up the teaching positions are a continuous process. Teaching positions fall vacant due to resignation, retirement and additional requirements on account of enhanced students’ strength, he added.

Explaining further, the HRD official indicated that the premier institutes are adopting several measures to address the issue of faculty shortage so that the studies of students will not be affected. Many institutes are engaging research scholars, visiting faculty, re-employment of retired faculty, recruiting faculty on contract basis etc. to mitigate the faculty shortage and enable continuous teaching and learning process. The premier institutes also publish year-round rolling advertisements to attract faculty, he informed.

Apart from IITs, NITs, IIEST and central universities, IIITs across the country have 324 vacant teaching posts while IISc (Indian Institute of Science) have 88 teaching positions vacant. School of Planning & Architecture (SPA) and IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research) have 96 and 100 faculty positions vacant respectively.
