"The erstwhile government of Andhra Pradesh went on a spree of giving out permissions to private unaided colleges. Therefore, supply is disproportionate to demand because of which seats are going vacant," said Papi Reddy, chairman of Telangana State Council of Higher Education.
Courses with lack of students and abundance of seats
- Engineering
- Applied arts and crafts
- Architecture
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Hotel management

7.5 lakh seats are available in the above courses but have no takers in Telangana since 2012-13 in colleges affiliated to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Even with negligible takers for the non-professional courses, the government continues to issue permission for setting up of new private unaided colleges.
As per AICTE, there are 791-affiliated institutions in the state of Telangana.
These institutions altogether have an intake capacity of 3,60,194 across all fields. But the total enrollment in 2015-16 academic year was only 1,91,714, which is almost 53.22%.
