Female students comprise more than 80 percent of the seats for the course of MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Male students mostly shun the course of dental study, hence the MDS seats in the private and government colleges of these states are filled majorly by females.

Until completion of the convener quota for postgraduate dental admission in the session of 2019-2020, 93 seats out of the total 114 seats were occupied by females and males took only 21 seats. In the first phase of management quota seats, a total of 71 seats were allotted to the female dentists while only 37 seats were taken by male dentists. There was a similar pattern in the PG dental admissions in the session 2018-2019.

This is a trend which is noticeable from the graduation level of BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) as males mostly prefer to go for the more fancied MBBS programme rather than BDS. They give multiple attempts in order to achieve an MBBS seat and do not settle for BDS which is not the case with female students.

The President of Telangana Dentists Association, Dr. Priyanka Marthineni, gave a few reasons why the majority in dental education constitutes females. Students aim for MBBS but if they fail at getting a seat, female students are content to join BDS because of many reasons. Pursuing MBBS is quite expensive and students also have to invest at least nine years for the completion of post graduation (MD). Due to the increasing competition, having just an MBBS degree is not much beneficial.

Parents have to spend huge amounts of money for their children’s MBBS. This is a big factor as most parents think they can save that money for the marriage of their daughter. The time taken for the completion of MBBS is also a factor that leads to delay in marriages. Dr. Priyanka further added that no night shifts and emergency duties make it a better choice for females. They can also open their own clinic and work as per their convenience and pace.
