About 1200 engineering BPL students in Telangana find themselves in a soup due to non-issuance of their original certificates and documents by colleges where they have pursued their UG courses in engineering.

The main reason cited for this is the Telangana Government’s delay in reimbursement of fees to colleges for students Below Poverty Line (BPL) for over 2 years now. Post split of Andhra Pradesh, the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had agreed to reimburse to colleges the fee of students of their respective states. However, the Telangana government has not reimbursed fee of several students from the state studying in Andhra Pradesh till date.

The Telangana Government owes Rs. 3,600 Crore approximately to private colleges in for fee reimbursement dues, covering about 14 Lakh students across 3000 engineering colleges!

The end result? Students, esp from BPL are finding it increasingly difficult to get admission to good colleges for further studies or even get a job, without a provisional degree/ certificate of passing college.

Gopi Talluri, a B. Tech student from RGUKT, Nuzvid was unable to take admission to National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy, even though he made the cut. As per RGUKT, Nuzvid, he still owes dues amounting to Rs 1.20 lakh to the college! Talluri is currently employed in IIT Madras as a Project Associate but is not getting his stipend because he has not been able to produce his B. Tech provisional passing certificate.

Another student, Uday Goud has recently resigned from his current job as an Environment Engineer but is facing difficulty in getting another one.

All the students in the same boat have profusely blamed the Telangana government’s negligence and delay in releasing the funds.

Finally, sound students had to pay additional Rs. 60, 000 to procure their certificates from the colleges. In this hopeless plight, the students have decided to raise the issue to the Central government, in spite of the state government assuring the private colleges of the clearance of their dues.
