Telangana Govt. to Set Up Five New Medical Colleges

With an aim to give more emphasis to medical education, the state government of Telangana has decided to set up five new medical colleges in the next five years. Telangana CM, Mr. K. Chandrasekhar Rao has directed the concerned officials to initiate the process for setting up new medical colleges. The officials will soon come up with a proposal to set up five new medical colleges.

According to sources, the Telangana government is expected to set up new medical colleges in the following districts –

• Karimnagar
• Ramagundam
• Jangaon
• Sangareddy
• Vikarabad

Apart from the above districts, the state government is also planning to set up a new medical college in Khammam.

After 2014, the state government of Telangana set up medical colleges in Mahbubnagar and Siddipet. The medical college in Mahbubnagar was set up in 2015 while the medical college in Siddipet was set up in 2017.

From the academic session 2019-20, AIIMS Telangana located at Bibinagar (Nalgonda) will start functioning. The premier institute is set to enroll students in MBBS course from the academic session 2019-20.

One of the officials of state government indicated that the government would set up medical colleges in Nalgonda and Suryapeta by 2021. At least one medical college among these two will start functioning from the academic session 2020-21. The state government has applied for MCI approval for setting up new colleges, he added.

At present, there are 3,500 medical seats in colleges across Telangana. Among these seats, 1,150 seats are being offered in government medical colleges. If new medical colleges start functioning, more MBBS seats will be offered to aspirants. The state government is also planning to increase intake in PG medical courses.
