The government of Telangana is planning to scrap TS EAMCET for engineering courses from the academic year 2018. The plan is to replace Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The reason for adopting national level exam for engineering admissions is the recent TS EAMCET 2 paper leak scam. The question paper got leaked a day before the examination, and eventually the government cancelled EAMCET 2 and conducted EAMCET 3 which received a negative response from parents and students.

Moreover, replacing JEE will also bring about changes in the intermediate curriculum. So far, the curriculum of Intermediate (+2) is prescribed by Board of Intermediate Education (BIE). Junior colleges are following state level syllabus as prescribed by BIE and if the government wants to replace JEE, the syllabus has to be changed.

On the other hand, the government planned to scrap TS EAMCET from the year 2017 only. However, the delay in taking decisions and due to lack of time to prepare students led to a change of decision. Usually, EAMCET notification has to be issued by the last week of December or first week of January.

The other reasons for scrapping EAMCET is that out of 275 engineering colleges across the state only a few colleges are recording 100% admissions. Similarly, the number of students joining in intermediate is increasing, and the number of students appearing for intermediate is decreasing. Most of the students prefer to join degree courses instead of engineering due to lack of employment opportunities.
