Telangana Govt. to Set Up New Government Engineering Colleges

With an objective to give more chances to students pursue engineering education in government colleges, the state government of Telangana has decided to set up more government colleges or upgrade the existing government polytechnic colleges into government polytechnic and engineering colleges. At present, the state government is preparing a detailed proposal to set up more engineering colleges.

The idea to set up more government engineering colleges was mooted due to high demand for engineering seats in state-level universities and engineering colleges. At present, only 14 government colleges in Telangana offer 3,055 seats in engineering courses.

One of the major problems is that most of the government engineering colleges in Telangana are located in Hyderabad and Warangal. There are hardly any government colleges in the backward districts of Telangana. The proposal that is being prepared by Telangana government will focus on setting up government engineering colleges in backward districts.

Earlier, the state government had submitted a proposal to AICTE to accord permission for setting up new government engineering colleges. The state government had also requested AICTE not insist on infrastructure during the initial stages of technical institutes.

AICTE may grant permission to commence academic activities in the temporary buildings. Once the permission is granted, the state government will upgrade the infrastructure as per AICTE norms within the stipulated period.

Apart from focusing on engineering courses, the state government will also launch courses in aviation and defence.
