Telangana: Students Lack Clarity on NEET-UG 2017 Counselling
- Now, the candidates who qualified in NEET-UG 2017 are confused, as there is no clarity on the counselling process.
- There is no clarity as to who will hold the counselling process for the ‘B’ category seats.
After a long wait, NEET-UG 2017 results were out on June 23, 2017, and around 56,000 students from Telangana qualified in the examination. For the first time, the state government is going to fill the MBBS and BDS seats based on NEET merit. Now, the candidates who qualified in NEET-UG 2017 are confused, as there is no clarity on the counselling process. The state must fill 85% of seats in MBBS and BDS courses, and there is no clarity on the procedure of the allotment of seats.
Last year, NEET ranks were used only to fill up ‘B’ category seats in minority, non-minority and private unaided colleges across the state. This year, both ‘A’ & ‘B’ category seats will be filled based on NEET merit.

What are ‘A’ & ‘B’ Category Seats?
- The seats in government medical colleges come under ‘A’ category (state quota).
- Private medical colleges consist of ‘A’ (state quota), ‘B’ (Management quota) and ‘C’ (NRI Quota) category seats.
Kaloji Narayanarao University of Health Sciences will fill the seats that come under ‘A’ category. The state government will issue separate notification for filling ‘A’ & ‘B’ category seats in government and private medical colleges across the state.
However, there is no clarity as to who will hold the counselling process for the ‘B’ category seats. Either Kaloji Narayanarao University or Telangana Private Medical & Dental College Managements Association (TPMDCMA) have to carry out the counselling process. Students are confused about the current scenario, and state government has not taken any decision on the same.

Once the notification for ‘A’ & ‘B’ category seats is issued, the candidates who qualified NEET must apply for the seat allotment. The varsity will prepare a separate merit list (‘A’ category), and admissions will be done accordingly.
In 2016, TPMDCMA conducted the admission process for ‘B’ category seats. According to sources, the state government will give clarity on ‘B’ category seats by the last week of June or first week of July.
