An animal health-cum-awareness Camp was organised by the Assam Agricultural University under its ongoing DBT funded project ‘Capacity Building and awareness generation towards combating some microbial zoonotic infections through community participation in Kamrup and Lakhimpur districts of Assam’ by the Department of Microbiology, College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara at Govindpur, Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district recently.
There also was an awareness meeting held in this regard wherein Dr DP Boraa, Principal Investigator of the DBT project educated farmers on various zoonotic diseases transmissible between animal and human beings, along with the prevention and control by vaccination of livestock and pet.
The programme saw many participants from the veterinary background. Dr DP Saikia, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology stressed on the need of vaccination of foot-and-mouth disease, considering the flood-prone area that it is.
Dr S Rahman, Senior Research Fellow (SRF) of the DBT Project, spoke on farm cleanliness and hygienic production of animal-origin food-like meat, milk and egg for better prevention and control of zoonotic infections.
Among other members present were Dr B Borah, Dr S Borah and Dr P Baruah.
Leaflets and farm literatures were distributed among the farmers and children on conclusion. Overall, the camp was a huge success.
