Through this quote, Charles tries to convey that when we react negatively to a situation, it makes our experience better. Similarly, when we respond positively to a scenario we have a delightful experience to recall for a lifetime. Therefore, our reactions to certain events in life play a significant role in the outcome of our experiences. 

For example, two people are going through the same failures in life. One person pities themselves and gets discouraged by the event, and the other person learns from their mistake and tries to never repeat it. So, when these two individuals recall this failure in life, one will have a bitter feeling towards the experience, while the other will be proud of themself for not getting discouraged and trying harder. 

Another interpretation means that the events in our lives are not under our control. However, the way we react to them can be controlled and changed. So, we must react positively to every good and bad event in our lives so that we have a good experience.
