Three New Medical Colleges to be Set-up in Assam

Three new medical colleges are proposed to be established in Kokrajhar, Nalbari and Tinsukia of Assam in the next three years, disclosed by Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Health Minister in a press conference in Guwahati.

The minister further said that the land acquisition process has been completed and all these medical colleges will have 500 bedded hospitals. These medical colleges are proposed to be ready by 2020. The foundation stone for the three new medical colleges in Kokrajhar, Nalbari and Tinsukia of Assam will be laid in January 2019 by Assam Chief Minister.

The minister also said that the ongoing construction work of the Diphu Medical College and Hospital will be completed soon. The construction work of another three medical colleges at Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Nagaon is underway. Each medical college will enrol 100 students in MBBS course.

Around 90 per cent cost of the medical colleges will be borne by the centre and the state government will bear the rest of the amount. For the inspection by the Medical Council of India, the state has to upgrade the hospitals in the second phase. It will cost the state INR 40-45 crore in each hospital. The state has to bear the entire amount, the minister said.

Regarding setting up of AIIMS at Changsari in Assam, the minister said that the state government has already submitted an affidavit in the NGT after its got complaints opposing the construction work on the allotted land.
