Hindustan Unilever and Adobe are some of the top recruiters that will not be participating in the final placement at IITs. Some of the other big names on the list are Google, Facebook and McKinsey. These companies have decided to skip the official placement channel, however, they are recruiting students off-campus.
Placements at IITs for the current session had started in December 2016. Usually, companies willing to recruit students have to visit the respective campuses and interviewing candidates for their offers. Companies have to visit one campus at a time in order to pick talented students from all institutes.

To make the process more effective, some of the giant companies have decided to pick students on the basis of online tests as it allows them to reach students from all the premier institutes simultaneously and pick the best students.
Google and Adobe have adopted the online test scheme to shortlist students and interview them before making offers. Google only visited IIT Bombay this year for placements. The technology giant will not be participating in final placements at either of the IITs.
Hindustan Unilever has also decided to keep away from campus placements of IITs. Although the company is not participating in the placements for the second year in a row, it has been hiring IIT students through pre-placement offers. It rolls out offers for permanent jobs to interns who qualify its requirements.
The IITs are not pleased with this new recruiting strategy of companies. Debasis Deb, Chairperson of Career Development Centre, IIT Kharagpur said that the institutes do not entertain organizations that want to hire students off-campus but will welcome companies like HUL that are still taking interns.
Anishya Madan, Industrial Liaison Officer, Placement Cell, IIT Delhi also agreed on inviting companies that are willing to pick interns.

According to sources, McKinsey and Facebook have also moved on to the online selection process for hiring students. Officials of the top companies have agreed that trying to get the premier slots of the placement is a huge fight and hiring online makes the process simpler. It also allows them to access a larger group of students.
