Two Indian Teens Among ‘Google Science Fair 2016’ Global Finalists

Two teens from India will now be competing for $ 50,000 scholarship at ‘Google Science Fair 2016’.

This year’s Google Science Fair finalists include 2 Indians and four Indian-origin teenagers. Among the 16 global finalists, Fatima, 15 and Shriank, 15 will be competing from India to win the $ 50,000 scholarship.

The invention of Fatima, that gave her entry in the sixth annual ‘Google Science Fair 2016’ was an automatic water management system to control the closing and opening of gates at the main reservoir. The system could also control the water supply provided to the irrigation canals.

On the other hand, Shriank, developed a device that one can use every day. This 15-year-old developed a wearable ‘KeepTab’, the system runs using a cloud-based deep-learning framework which can help a person remember the location of his day to day objects. Thus acting as a human -memory.

Shriank, who was also the finalist at the FIRST LEGO League World Championships in 2012 is currently studying in high school at National Public School, Indiranagar in Bangalore. Fatima is a studying in Hyderabad at Sadhu Vaswani International School.

The other four Indian Americans to compete in the finals are:

  • Anika Cheerla, age 14
  • Anushka Naiknaware, age 13
  • Nikhil Gopal, age 15
  • Nishita Belur age 13

Top inventions by these young minds that made the ‘Google Science Fair 2016’ finalists were as follows:

  • Gopal from New Jersey came up with a way to test Malaria with the help of a smart phone.
  • Cheerla from California was the inventor of a machine to predict any kind of future breast cancer occurrence using non-cancerous mammograms.
  • Naiknaware of Portland, Oregon developed a Fractal Inspired Chitosan and Carbon Nanoparticle Based Biocompatible Sensor for Wound Management.
  • Belur from California, on the other hand came up with a way for detection of defects on any kind of metal surface by just using laser light reflection.

Another participant who was awarded for his invention was Advay Ramesh.

He developed a handheld terminal (FishErmen Lifeline Terminal (FELT) to enhance the safety of fishermen and productivity using the Standard Position Services (SPS) for which he was awarded the ‘Community Impact Award’.

  • Ayush Panda
