All these changes are made in the hope of increasing the quality of education of scholars. Now that the seats are limited, competition will definitely increase.
Earlier, all professors, assistant professors and associate professors used to take up to 8 scholars. But according to the new rule, a professor can take up to 8 scholars, an assistant professor can take up to 6 scholars and associate professor can take up to 4 scholars.
Implementing this rule will definitely ensure quality over quantity. But nowadays, Ph.D is seen as a ladder to success - so the number of registrations has increased and restricting or limiting the seats will ensure competition.
The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has received 1500 registrations against their 3500 seats and the new rules will be applicable in the next fifteen days. Other universities and institutes have received the notice too and will be implementing the rules soon.
