UGC Grants Approval to Mumbai University's Distance Learning Wing
The Mumbai University Distance Learning Institute named IDOL will finally start its operations after the UGC decides to grant it the affiliation of recognised Distance College. The decision was pending as MU Accreditation lapsed.
The admission process of the Distance Learning Wing of the University of Mumbai is about to start as the University Grants Commission (UGC) grants approval to the wing. It was stalled previously due to the lapse of affiliation of MU with the UGC University Grants Commission.
An updated list was released by UGC on Wednesday evening where UGC highlighted the names of distance education institutes which have finally been granted UGC recognition. Mumbai University Institute of Distance and Open Learning, which is known as IDOL was featured in the list. As many as 30,000 students breathed of relief who were waiting to finish the MU IDOL admissions process.
Vinod Malale the Public Relations Officer of IDOL has said that they gave the previous list as a miss because the compulsory on-site visit by a UGC delegated expert committee recently took place and their report was at the pending stage that time. When their report was submitted, the Mumbai University Administrative team was sure that IDOL would be featured in the updated list of UGC. He also informed that the admission Guidelines and procedure for admissions will soon be rolled out.
Following is the list released by the University Grants Commission.
UGC had issued a notification on June 2017 to regulate distance learning programs offered in India, which made it mandatory for the institutes to get the regulator’s recognition for these courses.

IDOL didn’t feature in the first list of UGC’s recognised institutes which was issued in August 2018 as the University’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grading faced an expiry. IDOL also failed to get listed in two consecutive updated UGC recognised Open Learning Institute lists published in January and in the last week of June respectively in 2019.

Newly implemented rules required the applicant institutes to achieve a NAAC score of minimum 3.26 on a 4-point scale before the end of the 2019-20 academic year and also get the affiliation with the UGC.
