UGC asks 123 Varsities to Drop 'University' from Their Names
- UGC has directed 123 universities to refrain from the use of word 'University' in their name.
- However, institues may use 'deemed-to-be-a-univeristy'
University Grants Commission UGC has ordered 123 institutions, which are regarded as colleges of higher education to abstain from using the word 'University' in their respective names.
According to PK Thakur, UGC Secretary, a circular issued on November 10, 2017, by the Supreme Court, it has been informed to the head of these institutes to refrain from using the word 'university' in their names. However, institutes may use 'deemed-to-be-university'. He also mentioned that strict action would be taken against institutes who do not follow the circular.

Institutes to drop the word 'University' from their names as directed by UGC:
- Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi
- Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi
- Christ University, Bangalore
- Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
- Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi
- Symbiosis International University, Pune
- Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani
- Graphic Era University, Dehradun
- Indian Veterinary Research Insititute, Uttar Pradesh
- Karnal Forest Research Institute, Haryana
As per the circular, UGC has also asked the institution to come with an alternative name in cases the government makes the use of university in their news and notifications. The institutions have been asked to make the necessary amendments in their names within 15 days from receipt of the circular.

However, representatives from the various institutions have shown strong opposition to the circular. Stating that they have already been making the use of deemed-to-be-university in their institute’s name.
