UGC Steps in Honouring Women Role Models by Establishing 10 Chairs in Universities

In the name of honouring women role models, UGC (University Grants Commission) has decided to establish 10 chairs in the universities. These chairs will be dedicated to women who have set an example through their excellence in the field of science, art, academics, and social development. Among various other names, the chair includes the name of singer M.S. Subbulakshmi, poet and freedom fighter Mahadevi Verma, and Marathe queen Devi Ahilyabai Holkar.

The establishment of the chairs will be done in association with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), which will also be responsible for the overall funding of the chairs. Meanwhile, the ministry will be responsible for managing the funds for 5 years, the universities are held responsible to do the research and prepare a list of the most prominent women, deserving the seats. Along with this, the universities will also be responsible for publishing books and articles related to the subject.

The UGC Secretary, Rajnish Jain said that although the seats are generally established to promote the scholar students, establishing the chairs for prominent women will help the students to learn more about eminent women’s personalities and get inspired by them. We are not only working on the establishment of new chairs but also focused on reforming the existing chairs simultaneously.

The universities which are eligible for the establishment of chairs are instructed to set up a team of three members, two from university and one from UGC, to create an eligibility list for chairs. The universities will have to submit the detailed list, along with proper planning and annual budget to UGC by the end of December 2019.
