UGC Issues Guidelines to Ban Use of Plastic in Higher Education Institutions
UGC has issued guidelines to ban the use of plastic in higher education institutions. Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign is being launched by the Government of India.
On Friday, 30th August 2019, UGC issued guidelines to ban the usage of plastic in educational institutions and universities. This guideline is issued by University Grant Commission to support the Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign that is going to be launched by the Government of India from 11th September 2019 to 2nd October 2019. The aim of this campaign is to eliminate plastic waste and usage of plastics.
UGC Plastic Ban Guidelines
The UGC plastic ban guidelines are applicable to all the HEIs i.e. Higher Education Institutions in the country.
UGC wants the Higher Education Institutions in the country to adopt practices and policies towards plastic-free and cleaner campuses.
The UGC guidelines asked the Higher Education Institutions in PAN India to use eco-friendly materials in the place of plastic.
Every HEI needs to ban plastic usage in hostels, shopping complexes, canteens, etc in the institution’s premises.
Every Higher Education Institution needs to carry out sensitisation workshops on the harmful impacts of single-use plastics.
The Institutions should make it compulsory for students to avoid using non-bio-degradable plastic items in institutions.
The Institutions should also encourage their students to spread awareness in their respective households and make their households 'plastic-free'. Necessary alternative facilities can be used such as water units can be installed to avoid the usage of plastic water bottles, and cloth bags, jute bags, paper bags, etc, can be used instead of plastic bags on campuses.
The villages adopted by Higher Education Institution under the Unnat Bharat Abhigyan need to spread awareness of the harmful effects of plastic usage in the villages and make the villages plastic-free.
Plastic wastes are always a big environmental concern as it is affecting the environment in a devastating way like it is choking the water systems and rivers in rural areas, it is also hampering soil fertility and health of living beings.

The government has decided to make the plastic ban a national level campaign. By banning the usage of plastic in HIEs, UGC is trying to educate the students regarding the harmful effects of plastics so that they can influence other people and make them understand the need to shun the use of plastic.
