UGC Academic Credit Bank Details

UGC has proposed a National Academic Credit Bank during the three-day Training of Teachers (ToT) for Student Induction Programme (SIP) at IIIT-Hyderabad. Prof Patwardhan, UGC Vice Chairman said that the proposal is similar to the one which exists in some foreign universities.

According to a press release, Patwardhan had stated that under the new system that will replace the Choice Based Credit System, the students will be able to pursue a degree offered by a different University than the one they have taken admission in, as well as receive a degree from another university. He added that this step will help the student be provided with a lot more flexibility. For instance, if a B Tech student needs 150 credit points, 120 of this are compulsory from the core subjects and the remaining 30 points can be earned through hobby courses. So the students get 120 points or credits and they can then move on to the next level without waiting to spend the scheduled time by redeeming the 30 earned points.

The professor also said that the UGC has already appointed a committee for the same. Soon, the peer review and implementation will be put in place and other formalities will be worked out. Once this has been properly discussed, it would come into effect by the academic year 2021 on an experimental basis in any of the universities under the UG and PG level according to Professor Patwardhan. The Training of Teachers program also included workshops, interactive sessions, and talks which witnessed the participation of around 225 faculty and teachers from the various institutes across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
