University Grants Commission is all set to introduce new rules for the eligibility of institutions to become a Deemed University. The decision has been taken for better learning process and employability of the students.
The Indian Universities will now have to surpass additional eligibility criteria if they wish to get the status of Deemed University from the Central Government. The status of gaining autonomy granted by the Centre will include more qualifying stages which will be defined by the UGC under the guidance of the Centre. The decision has been taken by UGC (University Grants Commission) as a step to improve the availability of employment opportunities and learning process for the students in the universities.

It is important for the applying institution to be in operational condition for at least 20 years or more if they wish to gain autonomy.
Having at least 2,000 students and 100 professors or teachers per academic year is also a must for the Deemed status.
A minimum of 1:20 teacher-student ratio is a must for autonomy.
