UGC Reforms: Colleges in Telangana Hoping for Autonomy Status this Year
One of the principals of a reputed college revealed that UGC is very strict in awarding autonomy to colleges and they hope that new reforms will provide more freedom to college managements in decision-making.
Various colleges expressed their satisfaction over the Union Budget 2017 which stated that reforms would be brought in University Grants Commission or UGC through which more colleges will be given autonomy. A total number of 53 colleges were granted autonomy status in the year 2016 in Telangana. Other colleges which hoped for autonomy status were left disappointed. However, these colleges are hoping for autonomy this year as reforms will be brought in UGC.

Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister has assured that the reforms in UGC will help in bringing greater academic and administrative autonomy colleges to educational institutions. However, conferring autonomy status is subjected to the performance of the institute. Most of the college managements across Telangana felt that the move taken by Arun Jaitley will strengthen the functioning of colleges.

According to sources, there are various colleges in Hyderabad itself which have been seeking autonomy status since 2002. One of the officials associated with an engineering college explained that the autonomy status would help the colleges to apply for individual grants from the University Grants Commission under various schemes.
