UGC to Grant Autonomy to Accredited Colleges

The University Grants Commission (UGC) clearly indicated that it would grant autonomy to colleges which come under the affiliation of commission. However, these colleges have to apply for the autonomy status.

According to the new clause, i.e., XII Plan Guidelines to Autonomy Colleges, the university must play a significant role in granting autonomy to the colleges. On the other hand, it is the responsibility of the varsity to take the decision within three months from the date of application.

If the university rejects the application filed by the colleges for autonomy, it has to communicate with the concerned colleges by a speaking order. Similarly, if the varsity rejects the application by the college for autonomy, it will be considered as no objection from the varsity side and the college will be granted autonomy status.

Criteria for granting autonomy status to colleges:

• The autonomy status will be granted to colleges as per its performance in the previous examinations of the varsity, academic performance as well as reputation, infrastructure facilities, co-curricular activities and other facilities
• The colleges which are going to apply for the autonomy must have at least ten years of experience
• Academic achievements of both faculty and students will be taken into consideration while granting autonomy
• The college which applies for autonomous status must receive accreditation from either National Board of Appreciation (NBA) or National Assesment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)
• The colleges have which do not accreditation are not eligible for autonomous status
