UGC to Introduce STRIDE, A Trans-Disciplinary Research Scheme in Universities

The University Grants Council (UGC) has introduced STRIDE scheme on Monday in order to boost research culture in the universities across India. UGC has announced about the scheme on 1st July 2019.

Talking about the aim of STRIDE, the Union minister of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that STRIDE is likely to contribute to the development of India by increasing the research culture and innovation in colleges and universities with the faculties and students together.

The word STRIDE, which stands for Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India’s Developing Economy will not only work to increase researches but also to identifying young talents, encouraging innovation, build capacity, and promote trans-disciplinary subjects.

The STRIDE scheme will put extra focus on the humanities and Social Science which have high-impact potential. It has said that it will fund these projects.

The STRIDE, which is initially a 500 crore initiative, will work in three portions or components. The first one consists of identifying the young talents and providing research capacity building in various disciplines by nurturing, mentoring and supporting young talents to make them come up with innovative solutions for regional, national, local and global problems in various sectors of Humanities. The sector will be open for all disciplines and the UGC will be granting 1 crore rupees for the first component.

The second component of STRIDE is to improve problem-solving skills with the help of social innovation, discovery and action research for improving the well-being of people to eventually contribute to India’s developing economy. In this component, the scheme will work to encourage collaborations between, government, voluntary organisations, universities and industries. This open for all component will get the grant of 50 lakh to 1 lakh rupees.

The 3rd component of STRIDE will consist of funding high impact research schemes in the area of identified thrust areas in the fields of humanities and human sciences through a nationwide network of renowned experts from leading institutions. This will be a discipline-specific component which will receive up to 2 lakh rupees possible grants for proposal development.

The programme will also ideate the exchange of faculties from among the top institutions and universities. Exchange of scientists among national institutions including Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The exchanges will be on a temporary basis and will be liable to get exchanged at regular intervals.

The range or sphere of areas covered under this research programme will not be confined to a few specific streamline or boundaries but will be open for multiple sections and genres. Few among the top areas include History, Indology, Philosophy, Archaeology, Culture, Anthropology, Liberal, Psychology, Mass Communication and Journalism, Law, Education, Language, Arts, Sustainable Development and Environment.

Under the chairmanship of Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan, an advisory scheme has been set up to oversee the whole process.

The details of the STRIDE scheme will be accessible on the UGC website by 8th July 2019. By 20th July, call for proposals will be announced by the University Grants Council (UGC). The STRIDE web portal will be receiving applications from 31st July 2019.
