Unauthorized schools operating in Mumbai to pay INR 1 lakh as penalty
Unauthorised schools in Mumbai have been teaching students in Mumbai without proper permission. Here are all the steps taken against them.
In a survey conducted on the directions of the Education Commissioner, it has come to light that in Mumbai alone there are more than 238 schools that have been operating even if they are unauthorized. The Education Commissioner, Suraj Mandhare asked the Director of Primary and Secondary Education to take immediate action and asked the Deputy Director of Education to look into the matter as soon as possible and come to a proper resolution after discussing it with the task force. In the whole of Maharashtra, the total number of unauthorized schools fall in the range of over 674.

Dinkar Temkar, the Director of Primary Education has provided orders to all primary and secondary level educational institutions via their officers and teacher inspectors all across Mumbai - South, North, and West to instruct unauthorized schools to pay a fine of INR 1 lakh as a penalty. Schools that will continue to operate even after the issuing of this notification will be charged INR 10,000 every day it operates.
The list of unauthorized schools is based on information available on the state government’s Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) Database for 2020-21, and the schools did not upload the important information on this portal. These institutions have not been approved or recognized by the education department. These unauthorized schools have also not applied for or received approval from the Department of Education.
The Director of Primary Education has also stated in an official circular - “Students should not be admitted to these schools, and action will be taken against these schools. A public notice would be put up on huge hoardings in public places and outside the entrance gate of the illegal schools”.
A consolidated report has also been requested by the Directorate from all the departments regarding the steps taken to shut down these unauthorized schools.
