Union Cabinet Approves Bill to Empower IIITDM Kurnool to Award Degrees
Through this approval, IIITDM Kurnool will become the institute of national importance, and it will have the power to award degrees.
The Union Cabinet has approved a Bill on February 1, 2017, which empowers IIITDM or Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing, Kurnool to award degrees. Now, the Bill will be introduced in the Parliament for the approval.
The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India approved the introduction of Indian Institute of Information Technology (Ahmedabad) Bill 2017. The Bill will now include Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing or IIITDM Kurnool along with other institutes in this major act.

Through this approval, IIITDM Kurnool will become the institute of national importance, and it will have the power to award degrees. One of the officials of HRD Ministry indicated that IIITDM would be the fifth institution which is a centrally funded IIIT or Indian Institute of Information Technology.
As per Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act 2014, all the IIITs are regarded as the institutes of national importance. The Bill also gives a detailed account of the matters connected to administering these IIITs.

The government also gave a nod for the establishment of National Institute of Technology at Kurnool. The creation of NIT Kurnool was included in Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014. Now, the Cabinet has added new IIIT in the Bill and therefore making amendment in the IIIT Act 2014 is also mandatory.
So far, National Institute of Technology in Tadepalligudem (East Godavari) did not get a permanent campus. The foundation stone for the establishment of IIT Tadepalligudem was laid in the year 2014. On the other hand, the institute does not have permanent faculty members.
