Union Cabinet Approves Establishment of New AIIMS at Kamrup, Assam
- 100 seats for MBBS students per session, a nursing college with 60 seats for B.Sc (Nursing) students will be accommodated.
- The hospital at the new AIIMS will be having 16 Operation Theaters along with 22 Super-Speciality departments.
The Union Cabinet of the country has approved the budget for the establishment of new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kamrup district of Assam. This project will be managed and funded by the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,123 crores.
The new AIIMS building will be fully constructed within a time period of 48 months at least. The first 15 months will be allotted to pre-construction process, 30 months will be for construction process and the last 3 months would be for the commissioning process.

On the academic front, the institute will have a medical college with 100 seats for Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students per session, a nursing college with 60 seats for Bachelor of Science (Nursing) students per year. Keeping in mind, the pattern of AIIMS already in place, the institution will also have a hospital having 750 beds, trauma center facility, allied services/ facilities, and residential complexes.
The hospital at the new AIIMS will be having 16 Operation Theaters along with 22 Super-Speciality departments. In addition, to provide treatment with the use of the traditional form of medicines, there will be a department called AYUSH department, having 30-bed facilities.
It will also provide super specialty medical care to the local residents of Kamrup which will enable a chain of health workers and doctors to support the primary and secondary level facilities/institutions.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, AIIMS have also been set up in cities including Patna, Jodhpur, Bhopal, Rishikesh, Bhubaneshwar, and Raipur while the construction of Rae Bareli AIIMS is in progress. Also, three new AIIMS have been sanctioned at Mangalagiri in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, Nagpur, Maharashtra and Kalyani, West Bengal in the year 2015 along with at Gorakhpur and Bathinda in the year 2016.
