Union Cabinet Approves of 6 New IIT's and ISM, Dhanbad

The Union Cabinet has finally given approval on the long pending decision related to 6 new IIT’s. Now 6 new IIT’s will be established: IIT Tirupati (AP), Goa, Palakkad (Kerala), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Dharwar (Karnataka) and Jammu (J&K) will come under The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
Other decision made by the Union Cabinet is of converting ISM, Dhanbad into an IIT which will also be under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
Now 6 new IIT’s along with ISM, Dhanbad will be given the status of IIT’s. Moreover NIT, Andhra Pradesh will also be registered under The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. Earlier NIT, Andhra Pradesh was registered under r the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001.
Along with the other changes, the Cabinet has also approved for National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2016 according to which NIT, Andhra Pradesh in its first schedule.
As per an officials, “The post- facto approval of the Cabinet for establishment of NIT, Andhra Pradesh as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 2001 would give a legal entity to NIT, Andhra Pradesh. The proposed amendments to the NITSER Act, 2007 will ensure a high level of public accountability and increased participation of the stakeholders in the administration and academic activities of the Institute.”
