Union Cabinet Approves Setting Up of Central University in Andhra Pradesh
- Union Cabinet has given the approval to set up Central University in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
- The varsity will start functioning from the upcoming academic session 2018-19.
After bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana in 2014, the state government of AP has been urging the central government to set up a Central University in the state. Finally, the Union Government has considered the long lasting dream of AP government. On May 16, 2018, the Union Cabinet gave its nod for setting up a Central University in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. As per the plan, the central varsity will come up at Janthaluru in Ananthapur district.
Apart from the approval to set up central varsity, the Union Cabinet also approved Rs. 450 crore as the first phase expenditure for setting up the varsity in Ananthapur district. The Cabinet also gave its nod for the proposal to start academic activities of the varsity from a transit campus. The good news is that the varsity will commence its academic activities from the upcoming session, i.e., 2018-19.

An existing university in the state will take the responsibility of mentoring the central university until the formulation of its governing structure.
Over the last four years, the state government has set up numerous educational institutes focusing on varied fields of study to regulate students from going to other states for pursuing higher studies. Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh is slowly turning into an education hub. It is expected that more good and high-quality education institutes will come up in this region in the next three years.
