University Exams in Kerala to Begin from May 11

Guidelines have been sent by the Kerala Higher Education Department to various universities and other higher education institutions to conduct pending examinations from May 11, 2020, after the state has decided to implement partial restrictions from April 20. The examinations were postponed in March due to the nation lockdown amidst COVID- 19 outbreak.

The paper evaluation from home will also begin from April 20. A video conference was held by the Minister for Higher Education with the Vice-Chancellors of the state universities on April 15 to discuss the context of lockdown and the prospect of disruption of classes in the future due to similar crisis.

A committee has been set up headed by Dr B Ekbal, Member (Education and Health) Planning Board and former Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala, to recommend on various ways to conduct the examinations, paper evaluation and changes in pedagogy.

The state government on the order from the Higher Education Department, Kerala said that the universities in Kerala will have to make appropriate arrangements to conduct the examination so that the same can be completed in a week. The examination will begin from May 11, 2020, and pending paper evaluation will begin from April 20, 2020. Notification about the examination will be sent to students.

The higher education institutions are asked to follow guidelines given by the Health Department and government for safety against the spread of COVID 19.

An order has been released according to which the universities are also encouraged to try on-screen marking system for some subjects. The on-screen marking system is developed to be administered by universities and the Director, EFIRD is directed to make presentations to all Universities for the same. It has also asked universities to conduct online classed and also give online assignments to students.

According to the Health Department, the universities shall keep the libraries open for research student and ensure that all safety precaution is taken. The institutes will also conduct contact for Distance Education students in online mode or digital platform.

The Kerala districts with maximum COVID 19 cases will be combined to form the first zone and this zone will be under strict lockdown and without any restriction till May 3, 2020. These districts include Kasargode, Kannur, Malappuram, Kozhikode.

The second zone will comprise Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Kollam. In these districts, the hotspot region will be identified and sealed. The third zone consisting of Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Wayanad will be given partial relaxation from April 20, 2020. While the fourth zone comprising Kottayam and Idukki that has no COVID 19 case till date shall also be allowed for partial restriction.
