With a target to consolidate its 100-year-old relationship with India, the University of Birmingham (UB) has launched Indian Institute (UBII), which will focus on meaningful and impactful engagement with the country. The premier international university will also create awareness for India in the United Kingdom (UK) and the Midlands. The major emphasis will be on building strong business, cultural and academic ties with India. UBII will soon announce a fellowship scheme for Indian students.

UBII will give more priority to public engagement in culture, collaboration with corporate partners, a debate on policy analysis, teaching & postgraduate research and academic research and scholarship. The fellowship scheme to be announced by UBII will support Indian researchers visiting the University of Birmingham for developing research projects, business, policy engagement, joint publications and applications for external grants.

UBII was officially launched by Vice-Chancellor of UB, Professor David Eastwood and Higher Commissioner of India, Mr. Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha on January 29, 2018.

On this occasion, VC of UB expressed that Indian Institute of the University of Birmingham is a significant milestone in the long-standing relationship of UB with India. The researchers of the varsity are working to develop more sustainable cities in India. UBII will play a dominant role in fostering the research and teaching collaborations that benefit both the countries, he added.

The University of Birmingham’s relation with India began in 1909. The first cohort of Indian students travelled to Birmingham to study for degrees in commerce and mining. At present, the varsity has a wide network of 2,000 Indian alumni.
