University of Calcutta Seeks Details of General Intake Capacity from Affiliated Colleges

Calcutta University has asked the colleges to submit their intake capacity of general courses to have a level of transparency when it comes to seats available in the university-affiliated colleges. Principals of colleges say this is a step to curb union-raj in admissions.

University of Calcutta has asked for a detailed report from its all affiliated colleges regarding their intake capacity in General courses before the 2019 bachelors admission session in Calcutta University. The University has recently decided to increase the seat number for general students in all its affiliated colleges.

Some college principals seem unhappy with the decision as they suggested Calcutta University to increase seats in Honours courses as it witnessed a high number of applications whereas the general course seats in many colleges remain vacant. Although, CU has said it does not have any updated information about the general courses in its affiliated colleges.

Calcutta University has specified the intake capacity in Honours courses in its affiliated colleges. The principals of the affiliated colleges believe that the University is looking forward to specify the General seats in every college so that the colleges do not take admission exceeding its intake capacity coming under pressure of Students Unions which is a current scenario at the University affiliated colleges.

To know the intake capacity of colleges, Calcutta University has issued a letter to its 160+ affiliated colleges asking the intake capacity in arts, science and commerce general courses in all the colleges.

An official of the university has said that the University specified the figure of intake in honours and general courses in its affiliated colleges a long time ago. From then, the many old colleges have expanded their infrastructure and the university does not have the updated information about their new intake capacity. The report asked will help to develop transparency.

A principal of a North Kolkata college has informed that the Unions manipulate the admission process in the colleges in vast number. Many students with below average academic records who would fail to take admission in the college are taking admission by bribing and donating money to the College Unions.

Another principal of a Kolkata college said that there is a mismatch between the intake capacity and demand of the courses. The university could increase some seats in some specific subjects by decreasing seats in some subjects.
