University of Hyderabad Business Incubator Encourages Start-Up Culture

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has emerged as the first public universities in India to encourage an incubator ecosystem. With an aim to nurture technology-based enterprises/ ventures, UoH started a Technology Business Incubator (TBI) in 2011. Department of Science and Technology, Government of India sponsors TBI.

TBI majorly focuses on renewable energy, biotechnology and pharma domains. The sister incubator of TBI - Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurship (TIDE) focuses on electronics and information technology domain. Department of Information Technology, Government of India sponsors TIDE. So far, TIDE and TBI are successful in launching 14 start-ups. The varsity also housed two companies on the campus by providing working space.

Coordinator of TIDE, Professor Naresh Sharma revealed that the incubation support provided by TIDE includes mentorships, technical workshops, networking, evaluation of ideas, seed funding, providing infrastructure and valuation of market potential.

Administrative Coordinator of Incubators, Dr. BS Ramakrishna indicated that TBI and TIDE at UoH provide plug and play environment. The faculty of UoH are supportive in encouraging the start-ups through mentorship and research, he added.

In 2015, TBI associated with Technology Entrepreneur Zone (TEZ), a start-up accelerator to organise biannual courses at UoH in Startup Management.

Founder of TEZ, Nandita Seti explained that the Startup Management course offers a 360 degree understanding of business. The course inculcates entrepreneurial skills in the budding entrepreneurs, she added.

Recently, UoH has also started Bioincubators Nurturing Entrepreneurship for Scaling Technologies (BioNEST) in the Life Sciences sector and for healthcare start-ups.
