University of Michigan Partners with KMC and AIIMS for Genetic Research
With the help of a partnership between the University of Michigan, AIIMS and KMC Manipal, India is to expand its horizon in the field of genetic testing. The testing is expected to be utterly helpful for geneticists.
With the help of a grant of $2.3 million awarded by NIH (National Institute of Health), a researcher from the University of Michigan will be partnering with AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) and KMC (Kasturba Medical College) on genetic testing. This collaboration of the University with these premier Indian Health education institutions will expand the horizons of genetic research in the country.
The partnership between the three medical institutions will be proved extremely beneficial for the geneticists in identifying and confirming that genetic changes are vital for developmental disorders.

Human Genetics Associate Professor at the University of Michigan - Medical School, Stephanie Bielas talked about the collaboration. She said that genetic diagnosis is crucial for patients with rare disorders and without a proper diagnosis, the sufferer may incur inappropriate medical procedures and care.
Bielas further added that a precise molecular diagnosis of a disorder can result in a dramatic improvement in the care management of an individual. This would help in developing involved treatments to cure rare developmental disorders.

The researcher has been working with the partner institutes: AIIMS and KMS for the last four years. In those years, she has been involved in building the organisational and technological infrastructure that is required for better access to genetic testing in India. For many Indian patients, the advanced genetic tests remain out of reach, mainly because of the requirement of a multidisciplinary group of geneticists and the lack of wherewithal.
According to a study, seven out of every ten children in the country suffer from developmental disorders without receiving any genetic testing. The study also suggests that the families of the children are not even aware of the medical procedures available for their disorders. This study, that is being carried out through this collaboration will be giving these underprivileged people access to genetic testing without costing them a fortune.
