UPSC: 485 Candidates with Hindi as Mother Tongue Pass Civil Services Exam

The Civil Services Examinations (CSE) held in 2018 chose 485 out of a total of 812 candidates who chose Hindi as their mother tongue. Besides those 485, all of them chose other regional languages as their mother tongue in the 2018 test.

In 2017, the government informed that 1,056 were chosen for different central services out of which 633 had opted for Hindi as their mother tongue.

Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel put forward the data as a reply to the Rajya Sabha.

In 2016, 664 candidates had chosen Hindi as their mother tongue out of 1,209. While the number of candidates with Hindi as their mother tongue stood at 643 out of 1,164 which was a little less than the previous year, the number was found to go higher in the 2014 CSE, standing at 743 out of 1,363.

The Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) for recruitment to different civil services under the Government of India (GoI) like Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

The exam is held in three phases- Prelims, Mains and Interview. The vacancies in the various services vary every year.

The government believes in gender equality, which is why the Civil Services Examination doesn't ask for a fee from the female candidates, said the Minister.

UPSC gives relaxation of age to widows, women judicially separated and divorced women for up to 35 years and up to 40 years for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Lastly, the Minister said that this trend of a good number of CSE candidates with Hindi as their mother tongue being chosen for central civil services is motivating for future aspirants.
