The Government of Uttar Pradesh is planning to make education accessible free of cost up to intermediate level (Class 12). Minister of Divyang and OBC Welfare, Mr. Om Prakash Rajbhar revealed that the state government would make an official announcement in this regard soon.

He expressed his concern that even though education is being provided at minimal costs, many parents belonging to rural or remote areas are reluctant to send their children to schools. Over the past two months, the state government has been working in this regard and is spreading awareness about the importance of education, he added.

Uttar Pradesh will be the fourth state after Karnataka, Punjab and Telangana to provide free education. However, these three states provide free education to all the girls. While presenting the budget, Finance Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley allocated Rs. 85,010 crore for the education sector.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development is also working towards integrating several schemes including RMSA (Rashtriya Madhyamika Shiksha Abhiyan) and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). At present, the two schemes are functioning rigorously to make school education universal.

As per Census 2011, the literacy rate of Uttar Pradesh is 69.72%, which is regarded as the 8th lowest in the country. Lack of adequate teachers, lower learning outcomes and the poorest transition rate from primary and upper primary level are some of the challenges for the poor literacy rate in the state. Therefore, the state government has decided to mitigate these challenges by making education accessible to all.
