Uttar Pradesh to Soon Get an Exclusive Sports University

The state of Uttar Pradesh may soon set up a 'Sports University' that will lay emphasis on particularly those courses that are more centric to Indian sports. The government is likely to initiate the plan soon as it will directly impact the employment opportunities for the youth of the state.

The primary objective behind launching the sports university in Uttar Pradesh to boost the field of sports and management there. Traditional sports will be given prime importance. The UP Sports Minister, Mr. Chetan Chauhan further added that in order to take the implementation forward, the state government is currently contemplating on finalising a 125-acre land for the project. The state government will seek help from the Centre to fund the same. Necessary paper work in this regard has been completed, he said.

While stressing on the significance of management in sports, Chauhan added that it will benefit the students to take up roles of event managers, say, for instance, to organise various sports tournaments round the year. At present, the organisers are not well versed with the different nuances and rules that each sport takes into account, the feel of the entire tournament is not able to match industry expectations. With a course specific to sports management, the shortcomings in this regard can be dealt with, he added.

On being whether Cricket, a sport the unites the nation profusely, the Minister said although the focus will be on traditional Indian sports, the curriculum will definitely feature courses for cricket.

Proposed features of the Sports University in Uttar Pradesh:

• Special training programmes for students as well as coaches in order to cater to sports persons who retire from active sports, so that specific and necessary skills can be imparted to each.
• Various former sports and athletic persons will be hired as coaches. Additionally, foreign sports trainers may also be roped in as guest faculty.
• A course in Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) will be offered at the proposed university.
• Further, the university may also include a course on MBA in Sports Management which will further enable the students to take up managerial jobs in the growing field of sports.
