Vacant Faculty Positions in IITs, NITs and IIMs

Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister for State to Human Resource and Development explained that around 2,000 faculty positions are vacant in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). On the other hand, around 3,000 teaching posts are lying vacant in National Institutes of Technology (NITs). However, there are only 212 faculty positions vacant in Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

According to the writer statement present by the minister in Lok Sabha, the government sanctioned 5,073 teaching posts in IITs out of which 2,671 are vacant. Similarly, a total number of 5,428 faculty positions have been sanctioned by the government in NITs out of which 3,183 positions are vacant. In the same way, IIMs have been sanctioned 703 teaching positions out of which 212 are vacant.

He further added that the vacant teaching posts in IIMs, NITs & IITs will not have an adverse impact on students. Adjunct or Visiting faculty, research scholars and contract lecturers have adequately compensated the vacant teaching posts.

Earlier, HRD Ministry had urged the IIT Council that a total number of 1,000 brilliant students from B.Tech must be identified and these students must be given a chance to pursue Ph.D. directly after B.Tech. The ministry took this initiative to mitigate the shortage of faculty in premier institutes like IITs. With an objective to encourage more students to pursue research, the government is all set to provide scholarships to students. It will compensate the salary of an IITian whch he receives after B.Tech in the corporate sector.
