The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) released a notification on July 20, 2021, stating that it is not mandatory for candidates appearing for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2021 to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. The notification also informed that the Supreme Court has rejected the plea filed for postponing CLAT 2021.

The conducting body of CLAT had announced on June 14 that CLAT 2021 will be conducted on July 23, 2021, in the offline mode. In the notification, students appearing for the law entrance exam were advised to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Petitions were filed in the Supreme Court, challenging this notification of the Consortium. It was submitted that it is impossible for candidates to get vaccinated as most of the students taking CLAT are below 18 years of age. Therefore, the Apex Court has directed the CLAT Consortium to not insist on the students being vaccinated to take the exam.

It has been assured to all CLAT 2021 test-takers that strict COVID-19 protocols will be taken at the exam centres and the safety of candidates is paramount. The Consortium also acknowledged that it does not deem proper to postpone the exam at this stage and the authorities at the CLAT 2021 exam centres will not insist upon the candidates being vaccinated.

Highlights of the Judgement on CLAT 2021

The Supreme Court's judgement on the petition filed for the postponement of CLAT 2021 includes the following highlights:

  • The exam date of CLAT 2021 will not be pushed ahead.
  • CLAT 2021 will be held on July 23, 2021, from 2 to 4 pm in offline mode.
  • It is not compulsory for applicants to be vaccinated before taking the exam.
  • Everyone will have to mandatorily follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines at the exam centre.
  • Strict COVID-19 protocols will be followed at the CLAT exam centres for the safety of students as well as the examiners.

It is essential for the CLAT 2021 aspirants to go through the exam day guidelines and be prepared for the day.
