Terrorist incidents, managing flood situations, bomb threats and campus shootings will soon find a spot among the subjects to be taught in colleges and universities across the country. The UGC (University Grants Commission) has informed all the universities to introduce courses on Disaster Management and Financial Emergency. The UGC further stated that all the university must make these courses compulsory in the curriculum.

In an official written statement to all the universities, UGC pointed that students must have complete awareness of topics pertaining to disaster management in higher learning institutes. Planning for emergencies and natural disasters is something that educational institutes must train the students in. Through these courses, students will be able to prepare for the consequences of natural disasters and financial emergencies.

UGC further mentioned that the educational institutes have to provide course material to ensure that students are safeguarded against accidents, threats and attacks.

The course on Disaster Management must cover different topics like campus shootings, terrorist incidents, hazardous material release/spills, explosions, earthquakes and bomb threats. The course on Financial Emergency must cover varied topics such as the risk of eviction and damages from natural disasters, unexpected loss of income, sudden health emergencies and deaths.

UGC requested Vice Chancellors of all the universities to issue instructions to affiliated courses for including Disaster Management and Financial Emergency courses in the curriculum.

In 2015, the higher education regulator also notified guidelines on ‘’Safety of Students on and off Campuses of Higher Education/Learning Institutes’’.
