Vidyasagar College Kolkata to Launch Postal Cover on Birth Anniversary
Vidyasagar College of Calcutta University will also set up a museum commemorating the 19th century social reformer and academician. The College is in talks with India Post regarding the date of post-cover launch.
On the event of the 200th birth anniversary of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, noted Bengali Social Reformer, Vidyasagar College of the University of Calcutta takes a bunch of agendas. One of the agenda is in, launching a special postal cover commemorating the personality along with setting up a Vidyasagar Museum.
A professor of Vidyasagar College, Gautam Kundu told the media that with the help of India Post, a special postal cover will be launched in the birth anniversary of Vidyasagar. He added that a special event will be organised on 26th September 2019, which is the 200th birth date of Vidyasagar. In that event, the official launch date of the postal cover will be announced.
The chief minister of West Bengal previously announced a donation of 1 crore rupees for the infrastructural development of the college. Prof Kundu informed that the amount is still not received by the college but once received, the college will set up a museum dedicated to Vidyasagar and his works. In the college’s archive, there is the pocket watch, books and chair used by the social reformer, they will be exhibited along with other memorable things of Vidyasagar.
Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay, popularly known as Vidyasagar for his wisdom, played a key role introducing the Hindu Widow Remarriage Act 1856 shattering the social taboos of that time. He has his contributions in standardising the Bengali Language, reconstruction of Bengali alphabets and developing the Bengali Printing technologies when he was serving as an Assistant Secretary in Calcutta Sanskrit College.

Before the Lok Sabha elections, chaos popped up in the college where the people from Amit Shah’s roadshow allegedly vandalised the Vidyasagar statue in the college. After that, the state government of West Bengal re-erected the Vidyasagar statue in the College where the Cheif Minister announced a bunch of infrastructural reformations for the college.
