To encourage private investment and meet the growing need for quality facilities in the state’s Higher Education system, West Bengal Assembly passed the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata Bill 2016

Partha Chatterjee, Higher Education Minister of the state speaking about the Bill said that West Bengal Government had formulated a policy earlier sensing the growing need for quality facilities in the state’s Higher Education domain so that it can cater to the demand of the growing number of students. A new policy emphasises on the factors of expansion, inclusion & quality of the education.
Before the finalisation of the bill, St Xavier’s College Kolkata Educational Trust that sponsors the University had come up with a proposal to the Government of West Bengal for establishing a self-financing private university under the name of the St Xavier’s University Kolkata.
The minister expressed his hope that the university coming up by such a premiere educational trust would definitely help in improving the standard of quality education in the state. However, the state government would have the power to give directions and suggestions to the University from time to time looking at the interest of the students and public.

Trust is committed to providing instruction, training do research in various specialised field such as -

- Social sciences
- Management
- Medicine
- Humanities
- Management
- Performing arts
The minister also said the feasibility of the proposal for setting up such a university was thoroughly examined by the Higher Education Department of the state and subsequently proposed to include the new university for the purpose.
