On Tuesday, 5th November, the Mamata Banerjee led government of West Bengal announced the decision to increase the fees of the state-aided college and university teachers in West Bengal. The decision of fee hike will be implemented from December 1, 2020. In an event of the state government, the CM of West Bengal announced that the state has adopted the revised pay according to UGC revised norms of payscales.

The Mamata Banerjee government will have to bear an extra 1,000 crore rupees for implementing the UGC revised pay scale which was decided over the policies of the seventh pay commission. Ms. Mamata Banerjee has announced that the state university and college teachers will receive an increment of 3% from 2020 continuously for the next 4 years until the new Pay Commission.

Adding to it, Ms. Banejree has also announced an additional 5,000 rupees fee hike for the part-time and contractual teachers in the state institutions. The West Bengal government has ensured 60 years of service for professors and college teachers in order to ensure job security.

However, the state-teachers body has shown unhappiness over the decision and has decided that they will go on a cease-work at the end of the month. The Teachers Union has said that the state government implemented the revised payscale after 4 years and they are deprived of 4 years of benefit which was announced for them under the 7th Pay Commission.
