West Bengal Advances WBJEE 2020 Date due to Policy Changes for Private Technical Institutes

The schedule of WBJEE 2020 are advanced to 2nd February 2020 for preventing the engineering students of the state from moving elsewhere. The Association of Professional Academic Institutions (APAI), West Bengal proposed it previously.

The government of West Bengal Rescheduled the WBJEE 2020 dates earlier than the previously mentioned dates of WBJEE 2020. The decision has been taken to prevent students from going to another state after they get a rank in JEE Mains. The Association of Private Institutes in West Bengal named APAI proposed the Idea to Mr Partha Chatterjee, the minister of Higher Education of West Bengal.

The chairman of WBJEE Board Mr Mayalenddu Saha informed that the entrance examinations were previously set to be conducted on 19th April, which is now rescheduled to 2nd February before the results of Uchiha Madhyamik Examinations. Students can appear for WBJEE before getting the 10+2 results now.

Mr Saha also informed that the counselling will start from March 2020

Updates from APAI Meet in August 2019

The minister of West Bengal Higher Education Ministry, Mr Partha Chatterjee conducted a meeting to address the problem of vacant seats in WB Engineering Institutes. In the meeting, the Association of Professional Academic Institutions (APAI), West Bengal proposed to bring forward the dates of WBJEE Examination and WBJEE Counselling for filling the huge number of vacant seats reported every year in West Bengal Engineering Colleges. The meeting was held in the presence of Mr Partha Chaterjee with representatives of government and private engineering colleges of West Bengal. Mr Chatterjee informed that he will talk about the matter with the Chief Minister of the state, Ms Mamata Banerjee as well.

For some previous years, seats in the engineering colleges of West Bengal are remaining Empty. In the meeting held on Tuesday, 20th August, the fact was accepted by everyone that as the result of WBJEE Counselling are announced late than many state’s result declaration, students from West Bengal move out to other states where they have already secured admission.

Mr Satyam Roychowdhury, who is the chief secretary of APAI, proposed to release the results of WBJEE before the results of Uchha Madyamik Parikshha (12th Passing Exam of West Bengal Higher Secondary Council). He added if the results of WBJEE can be released before Uccha Madhyamik and counsellings are started, the student will secure a seat in the engineering colleges of the state which will lower the trait of moving to other states.

As the present representative questioned, what will happen if it is seen that the student has failed in 12th Passing board? The solution came from the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, Prof Chiranjib Bhattacharya. He said, ‘Then the admission of the student will be cancelled!’

The private institutes’ association, APAI has suggested conducting courses like MBA, Hotel Management, Hospital Management using the infrastructure already available in the colleges, this will bring more students to the colleges. The minister of state for Higher Education, Mr Partha Chatterjee has assured to reflect on the proposal. He informed the media that he has requested APAI to give his the proposals in written format for more discussion on the matter.

Among the top colleges of the state, Jadavpur University had about 261 seats vacant in Engineering streams, Jadavpur filled those seats with Decentralised Counselling but it did not help other institutes. Private institutes have reported that only 10 top institutes have got enough students. The government institutes have agreed to the proposals of APAI, it is only aa matter of time for the state to take action.
